Difference between normal and auto focus

What is the difference between and advantages/disadvantages of "Normal" focus setting and the "Auto" focus setting? Primarily though what is the "Normal" Focus setting?

The Android users guide only states the following:
"FOCUS MODE Touch to set Camera to use its Autofocus feature (AUTO), or to
more quickly take pictures focused at infinity (INFINITY)."

The Virgin Mobile users guide is not much help either:
"Options
Focus mode Set to Auto, Normal, or Off."

Autofocus actually focuses on objects. The other doesn't, so it will only work for long range and landscape shots. I would just leave it at auto

You can always touch what you want it to focus on
