I just got a Nexus 5X and upgraded it to Nougat. I like it very much so far but I have a question. I just got the September security patch which is a good thing but it automatically downloaded over my cellular data plan and I didn't get any notification until it was ready to install. I've looked through all the settings and can't find any way to change this behavior. I'm not opposed to the patches, I would just like to be notified that one is available and have the option to postpone the download until I can connect to my wifi. I could have done this today but I didn't have my wifi enabled at the time.

The only possible solution I've found is turn off automatic updates in the developer options. Anyone know of a better way?

I'm figuring that I am missing something in settings but I can't seem to find it.

    Thanks

Edit: It appears that this was not a security patch but an update to Nougat judging by other things I've been reading. The description of the update was a little vague and I assumed it was a security patch.

I've never had one download automatically...

EDIT: see below. I had the issue the same night!

That's the same thing that happened to me yesterday. Not cool, it blew through the rest of this month's data & used half of another month's worth - that's going to cost me an extra $10 this month.

I haven't found a setting anywhere either, to prevent this from happening again.

Mine happened while I was driving home from work.

I wondered if it's possible that I picked up a wifi connection on my drive home & when I lost it, it just switched over to cellular data to continue the download?

It just happened to me. First time that's happened, 49MB. I'll see if there's a bug report. Google is pretty good at breaking things that weren't broken.

I just looked at that link again - none of us specified that we have the 5X. Does that need to be added, or is that report somehow already associated with the 5X?

I'll add a comment. The only options are 5X and 6P right now that have nougat anyways.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the beta program? Are either of you on that? I signed up just to get Nougat.

Although the patch I got was a security update...

I know my update usually come in between the 12-14th of the month, so I turn my wi-fi on at night. I did get the update over wi-fi, but I didn't get a notification about it...it was downloaded & ready to install.

Is this Google doing this for their Nexus devices, push downloaded updates over cellular data? Because usually from what I've seen phones don't do that, and in fact they'll usually insist that you download the OTA update over WiFi, and give perilous warnings of dire consequences if you don't, and you insist on using cellular data to download the OTA, e.g. warnings of data corruption, large data bills, etc.

I've heard of certain US carriers doing forced OTA updates over their metered or limited data, in fact we had some posts about it recently.

I've actually seen a few posts about this over at the Nexus Help Forum.

It's not a thing which should happen, nor are there any settings to control the behavior (because it shouldn't happen), but multiple reports are hard to dismiss.

You may want to add your voices to this thread.

Probably at the Googleplex, Mountain View, CA, there's always on, reliable, unlimited cellular wireless data. And if you don't have that with a Nexus 5X....good luck!

Yes, I'm also on the beta program, I also signed up just to get Nougat & then I stayed on.

Thanks!! I googled quite a bit but didn't find that thread, I'll definitely post there, too.

Woah now, I never said you weren't crazy - just that you happen to share this particular issue with others. ;)

I'm sure getting a notification prior to downloading would work better for everyone concerned. I bet even the crappy US carriers would rather avoid this hassle. :cashdroid:

I've had a nexus for 3 years now and it's the first time it's happened. They definitely broke something. I got a notification that it had downloaded the update and it still had the text warning about downloading over cellular, they just didn't give me a chance to get home. In fact, I had just pulled into my garage when I got the notification! It definitely downloaded over cellular though.

Ok. I guess being in the Beta program is not a factor then. Thanks.
