I have seen reports where the display seems washed out and a little soft in definition. Hoping this opinion is a fluke. Need the USB host option, so the only two options ATM are the A500 and soon the Thrive. Screen on and weka wifi were an issue on the A500, so hope the Toshiba does not have those issues (along with a display at least as good as the A500).

Yeah, I would love to really see the Thrive in action soon. I am in the process of trying to sell my Xoom(which I love except for the ports) so I can buy the Thrive. I would be pretty bummed if I sold my Xoom and the Toshiba was not great.

But I will go on faith. Toshiba knows how to make good stuff and they also know what people want. I gotta believe they did this right.

Not looking good as far as initial reports.

Do you have any links to official reports on this? I have only seen forum postings about the screen not looking great in video's, not reviews from a hands on reviewer saying the video seemed washed out or anything negative.

I'd hate to sell my Xoom, which I love except the ports, for the Toshiba if the video sucks - ports or no ports.

That is the one I am talking about. The display must have been funky, or something wrong with it for a person to be so critical during a hands-on. Reports on the Australian version also appear to echo this.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the Toshiba Thrive dispay is underwhelming, in my opinion. I was surprised because I have a Toshiba laptop and that display is terrific. I went to my local Best Buy yesterday and compared the Acer, Asus, Motorola, Samsung and Toshiba tablets. I chose the Vortex Galaxy live wall paper for all the Android tablets and cranked them all up to full brightness. To me, all the displays were disappointing except for the Asus and the Samsung, which were excellent. The best display was the Samsung 10in., closely followed by the Asus Transformer.

Best Buy is starting to put Android tablets on display in their dedicated tablet sections. It sounds like they are not available in your area yet, but they should be very soon. To a certain extent, this is subjective, so I would see for myself. Maybe take your Xoom with you and compare them side-by-side. I needed ports and a great display, so I went with the Asus Transformer with the keyboard dock and that choice has really worked well for me.

Yep, most if not all Best Buys will be updated with tablet centers this week, by each store's inventory team.

The larger stores that are close or already set, have the Toshiba and even some Asus in stock. Our Lexington stores have the Asus 16gb and the keyboards in stock. I messed with the Transformer for an hour with different content and must recant my statement that the A500 display looks almost as good. My previous time was just a few minutes.

    Added:

Transformer display is tops, so if the Thrive has an iffy display, I will probably forgo the USB host and just buy a 32gb Transformer.

The display is very nice on par with the xoom but it is a little weak outside but usable.

I found the pixel coverage (no grain or line gaps like A500) to be IPS level good and the color more natural than the Transformer. Trans is still tops for contrast, but the Thrive is much better than expected.

Factor in the response time is better than the Trans and this makes the Thrive compelling to consider.

So... I have now owned a Samsung Galaxy 10.1, Asus Transformer, Motorola Xoom, Viewsonic Gtab, and a Thrive not all in that order. I am posting this on the Transformer. The Galaxy 10.1 and the Transformer easily have the best screens with the most vibrant color and the best viewing angles. It is very hard to pick the best from both of them sitting side by side. My issue with both if them was build quality. The Galaxy felt like it would flex and break very easily and the first generation transformers were plagued with dust behind screen issues and horrible black light bleed issues. I was hoping the thrive would be the tablet to show them all how it is done. Changeable battery, superior build quality, excellent storage options... alas it comes through on everything but the screen. It almost looks like they used the same panel as the Xoom. You can see the pixels in the screen and they almost form a vertical pattern through everything making the picture not as sharp as it could be. The viewing angles are also nowhere neat as good as the Transformer or the Galaxy 10.1. This was very surprising to me that Toshiba would choose a panel like this after the reviews that are posted about the Xoom. With all the display technology Toshiba touted before release they really needed to deliver a panel the same or better than what Asus and Samsung chose... In the end I am staying with a Transformer tablet. It seems as though they have worked through alot of the build issues and the latest one I purchased has no dust or casing issue and very minor black light bleeding. You can barely see it.

I respectfully disagree about 100% with your Thrive display critique and seems like you are referring to another display. The Thrive's display rocks and folks should see for themselves. The Xoom display is weaker compared to the Thrive.

the Thrive looks display looks awesome, second to none, until you are holding one right next to a Transformer or a GTab 10.1. I spent time with 3 Thrives (demo and two I purchased), all were the same. Personally, I thought the brightness and contrast were pretty awesome. Had I not held one right next to the other tablets, I wouldnt have ever noticed.. It's really quite good. But again, I have to agree, there is a pixel spacing that is noticeable WHEN you're looking for it. I dont think most people would find issue with it, unless they were comparing with something else.

I agree, people should see for themselves, I really think most people would find the display very good. And at least on the units I looked at, it shouldnt sway many people away from the Thrive.

I am not seeing the spacing issue and have been looking for it. The A500 has the issue, due to the pixel/panel arrays (black lines).

Even though the Transformer is a better display (not by a lot), the touch response of the Thrive is better than the Transformer, so seems IMO to net them out to zero advantage.

If I were not a media and gaming hog and mainly browsed or read comics, I would get the Transformer, since it at least has a microsd slot and the display is tops IMO.

The Thrive's storage options affords me the same options the Trans has without a keyboard attachment.

I'm satisfied with the overall performance of the screen. No complaints here.

However, the Thrive display does not look, feel, or sound like glass (if you tap on it). It is not as smooth and slippery as glass. It also has ripples. Unlike the glass on my Droid Incredible. Does anyone know for sure? Because I would swear it is just hard plastic. I.e., someday the scratches are going to start showing up.

Wow, that's amazing! If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. Thanks for linking that video.

Try to "buff" the screen with credit card and see what happens.
(hint: credit card can be Gorilla Glass killer)

I have a new 16GB Thrive I just bought for the girlfriend and I must say I am not happy with the screen quality, it looks like an old nokia cell phone, I can see the little pixels squares everywhere I look, is it supposed to be like this or is this one faulty? It has the latest 3.2.1 on it but no change. Even pictures and video look horrible. I have my Transformer which has the most amazing quality I have seen compared to the iPad 2, but to go from it to the Thrive is depressing. I have tried to adjust the brightness and nothing fixes it. If anyone knows whether this is normal please let me know so I can exchange it.

No that's not normal. Take it back to the store and exchange it for another one.
