I know that the default setting is to have the special "certain pixels only" display pulse on and off when there are notifications, but is there anyway to turn that off? I like how it will go on as you approach the phone with your hand, but when I'm not I'd rather not have that blink on and off. Would appreciate any feedback.

There should be a setting in settings called something to the effect if "Active Display"
I have last years though so they may have changed the name.

I don't think so. The display notifications are either on or off. There doesn't appear to be any middle ground. Either notifications blink on and off, or the screen doesn't come on at all - approaching hand or not.
