I've upgraded from my Moto E 2nd generation and did a hard reset on it. I would like to give it to my son to use simply to talk and text. No data, Facebook, email, or any apps whatsoever. I can get a prepaid SIM card with talk & text only but will I be able to activate this phone without entering a gmail address?

Yes, you can activate and use it with no Gmail/Google entered. You can just skip the signon step during activation and continue on your way.

    You can?
    When did that happen?

  5. That 'skip' button or use WiFi button has been there for a while. On 5.1 and above, you can't skip activation if the device is pushed into FRP

Excuse my ignorance of these matters, but what does that mean? I believe this phone has 5.1.

It's the version of Android system running on your phone:
    5.0 - 5.1.1 - Lollipop
    6.0 - 6.0.1 - Marshmallow
    7.0 - 7.1.2 - Nougat

  9. If you mean FRP, that is Android's Factory Reset Protection. If the device is reset through recovery mode, this mode is activated to protect someone's personal data in case the phone was lost or stolen.
