Just upgraded to Razor Maxx. Want to root but I also want to make sure I get the ICE Cream update when it comes out.

Am I correct in understanding that I should not root yet because then I would not be able to get the upgrade when ICE does come out?

Also, if I do have to wait.. what are the recommendations on how long I should wait after the release in case there are other updates? I'm always doubtful of first releases especially in light of the delay's etc.

Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

The choice really is your's :)

I have not used your device before (in fact, I have only ever had (and rooted) my Desire HD).

One thing worth noting is that, if you do wait until the ICS update, you may not be able to root straight away (not all root exploits work on newer builds of Android), which would mean you may have to wait for a new root method.

I know that ROM devs usually bring a pre-rooted version of any stock ROM out within a couple of days of it being released OTA though... if you were rooted and wanted to get the next (rooted) version of stock, then you could always flash that (in my experience though, custom ROM's are often better than stock ones... I don't like HTC's Sense UI, so have had Vanilla Android on my device since about 2/3 weeks after I started my contract in April 2011).

Perhaps other Razr Maxx owners could give you their opinions...

Root! ICS is another month or two(at least...so I've heard) You can always flash back to stock before the update.

I thought once you rooted you couldn't get back to stock? I'll try to look and find something in the fourum but if anyone can point me it would be appreciated.

Thanks

search for the droid razr utility in the all things root section. Download it and with a few clicks you are rooted. I believe you can flash back to stock with it just as easily. Correct me if I am wrong.

Rooting your phone will not stop you from receiving and installing an OTA, at least not on a Motorola phone (i.e. I don't know how S-Off affects updates on HTC phones)

Now installing custom recoveries and editing any part of the /system will stop you from installing the OTA though.
