1. Are you ready for the Galaxy S20? Here is everything we know so far!

Do you think this OTG cable would work?

Don't know about that one. But this one from amazon definitely does.
Amazon.com: T & S Electronics Micro USB Host Cable (OTG Cable) - Xoom, Galaxy S2, Acer Iconia A510, Toshiba Excite AT305, Google Nexus 7 & more.. LIFETIME WARRANTY!!!: Computers & Accessories

The price went up though. I bought it a few weeks ago for $5. Its $9 now. There are a few that I noticed from china for 60 cents but the shipping makes it about $5. Not sure how reliable they are. I have bought a bunch of usb cables from those places but I buy several because there's a good chance that one or two won't work.

I got 5 microSD male-to-female SD OTG dongle for .07 US each. Shipped from Hong Kong for $4.65. Tax free of course so basically got them at $1 a piece.

They work fine, can use my 1-16GB flash drives, or an SD drive in a flash drive converter. Also ordered an OTG multi-SD card reader but haven't received that yet. My 500GB passport drive also works like a charm, so these might be unneeded since it's pretty portable itself.

But also have an Aluratek 8000maH portable battery charger so don't want to have to carry too much.

I also got the bundle of 5. I picked them up from Amazon ( Amazon.com: [Aftermarket Product] 5x x5 5pcs Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable Flash Drive SD T-Flash Card Adapter For Samsung GT-i9100 i9100 Galaxy S II 2 GT-N7000 Galaxy Note Replace Replacement: Cell Phones & Accessories ). I use an SD to flash drive adapter with it and it works well. I haven't attempted to hook anything else up.

Are the OTG cables really device specific or is micro USB a standard? I'm having a hard time tracking a Nexus 7 version down for a decent price from a seller with less than many hundred negative reviews. I hate buying from Amazon now after so many bad experiences with their new low cost shipper ONTRAC. Also had many non deliveries from Hong Kong. If the Micro USB is a standard then I'll have a much easier time of finding one here in the USA.

Does the tab have to be rooted to use an OTG cable?

I bought one of the 65 cent OTG cables from Amazon which shipped free from Hong Kong. It took 3 weeks to arrive, but it works great, read/write on any thumb drive, sdcard, or card reader I've tried. How can anyone make money selling something for 65 cents and include free shipping from Hong Kong? I'm rooted using Stickmount.
