It's a social media site with a huge following for both shows, who specialise in crappy 4fps gifs of quotes from the shows.

Actually, I was trying to call up the scene with Strax delivering the paper - no idea what I said to tie to some SN site. :p

Went to the theater this evening to watch the premier (after having watched the premier on TV). Got there and the show was sold out. I was surprised. Found out it sold out before 10AM this morning!

Yes, I had no difficulty accepting Peter as the Doctor,
and wonder whether telling people to ask the right question will turn out to be one of his trademarks.
    Indeed :D.

Was amazed to read a few people saying they had trouble with his accent - I guess they'd never stepped outside the M25 in their lives.

Personally I liked "Don't look in that mirror, it's furious!" :D

Having had a bit of time to think... I think i've managed to work out what I didn't like about the episode.

I have no problem with Capaldi as the Doctor... He's got the serious acting chops to pull it off...

I have no problem with an older doctor.. sounds like good idea, and the next doctor always is a contrast from the previous one...

now, what was it that made me hate this episode...

Well, the whole point of the character is he has to be the Doctor... Whatever he looks like, whatever accent, whatever situation, there has to be the something about him that makes us the audience identify with him as the Doctor. Now usually this involves him coming in to some situation, taking control saying something along the lines of "I am the doctor and this is.... " and generally being at the center of everything. That clearly didn't happen here, instead we got a doddery old man, with amnesia/ Alzheimer’s. And that wasn't a pleasant thing to watch. And all the way through Moffat's diaglogue was saying "I'm the Doctor, don't you recognise me...."

Well, for me he wasn't, and it grated... And now that I've finished my little whine-fest, and the Doctor's got over his little mental breakdown (that should be forgotten by next weeks episode) we can carry back on with the series, and put this episode back in the pile marked never to be watched again (along with "Love and Monsters", "Fear her", and "The Sea Devils")

The same people, however, have no problem understanding Jenna Coleman's broader Lancashire accent though. Go figure....

I think broadness is a pretty subjective thing. I grew up not too far from Blackpool and to me her accent sounds pretty tame and well spoken, if anything.

Actually, I thought that line was a homage (or, an homage, whichever you prefer) to I, Robot.

OK for those of us in the US who haven't googled that yet, the M25 is a beltway that encircles London, 117 miles long.

And for the record, I thought that his accent was pretty tame, if you want a single opinion from this side.

I once worked with some Scots and when I first met them, I asked their buddy what language they were speaking. I was immediately able to understand that I was being cursed at and that drinks were on me, but that was all for a good two days. :D

    But Capaldi, no problem.

Personally I liked "Don't look in that mirror, it's furious!" :D

    Lmao!

I enjoyed the line about his eyebrows being so angry they'd probably declare independence from the rest of his face. ;)

I regularly get subjected to many various accents, I have no problem with Capaldi's. Sadly, as an American, much of the humor rooted in the actor's accents is completely lost on me. Fortunately jokes about Strax, angry eyebrows, and furious mirrors are universal enough that I get them!

    This! :D

I don't remember the show - MI-5 or Sherlock maybe - but there was a point where one of the guys sounded funny, even to me. So another character asked why he was trying to pull off Welsh, and the first guy said he was doing Scottish.

And I felt like I'd gotten somewhere because I actually got it going in. :D

Naturally, we're talking about once that night, that month, that year, this century. :p

    It's fun and frustrating.

The UK shows we get are so much better than ours and that's including all of nuances and details we miss.

The fun part for me is the second watching, with the pause button and my phone handy for googling.

That and my UK compadres patiently translating for me.

And for UK readers, "MI-5" is the show we know as "Spooks".

I guess the name was changed Stateside because "spook" historically has an additional (racist) meaning over there. Divided by a common language indeed ;)

True and just silly, everyone I know knows that a spook is a spy.

True, the racist implications are older. That would have been a popular slur with small minded bigots from the late forties to about the early seventies. The word isn't typically used in such a context anymore.

Ok, so there were some episode leaks of Doctor Who Season 8. Yes actual full-length episode leaks.
Below are spoilers about Season 8 Episode 2.

    Matt Smith returns again:

Edit: no he doesn't that was the Season 7 intro incorporated into the Season 8 rough render. My bad  .

And I'm not going to say much more because I don't want to watch any more than the first 2 minutes of a leaked episode. It's just a rough render of the episode. I will say there is a dalek who is so damaged that it has turned "good".

Did anyone find the last episode a bit confusing? I thought the story was convoluted and hard to follow, even by Moffet's standards. Still, Capaldi is coming into his own as the Doctor. Hopefully that was the episode that set the rest of the series (season) in motion.

Not confusing at all! I'm finally liking the new doctor after 4 episodes. Twists and turns in "Listen". This is a who's related to who and from where in the timeline does it all begin? The spacebarn was a loop I was not expecting that tied some things together yet opened more possibilities. Wow! Is all I can say.

Knowing that this is the last season with Clara as companion, is anyone watching the latest episodes wondering who will replace her? I realize they won't introduce the new companion until the Christmas special. Still, they've had a couple of characters that I think would be a good fit.

Do we? There have been nothing but cryptic comments and vague hints afaik. In an interview at the beginning of last month she herself said:

I confess that I'm really struggling with the new doctor... and Clara. I miss much of the dialogue, perhaps as a by-product of the accent plus the speed of the dialogue. They seem to be speaking very quickly. Or maybe my hearing is on the decline (which I'm sure my wife will attest to).

In any event, I have not warmed to the new doctor as I had hoped.

Blasphemy, I know. But there it is.

Perhaps you'd enjoy it more with subtitles? They do offer it with subtitles in the UK, so presumably you can get them with the American broadcasts.
