Does Android currently have cloud-style backups? What is backed up with the Google Account?
Yes Google is "cloud" based. Your contacts, email, calendar are all backed up in the cloud.
In addition, with Gingerbread, your applications are all backed up in the cloud as well, in terms of which apps you have downloaded and used.
Purchased apps have always been 'backed up' regardless of android version.
Correct, but in Gingerbread all market apps are "backed up", free or purchased.
Just to add here, that as you use more Google services, they also get backed up in the cloud. This includes Docs and Picasa albums.
I know, but not everyone's phone has GB yet, just wanted to make it clear that paid apps are backed up whatever version of android you have.
