unless I'm mistaken, awake time will always affect battery life. The more the phone's awake, the more power the phone is using

Yes. If your phone spends more time awake, it will use the battery more. When you go to Settings>About>Battery you will Awake Time and Uptime. If you click on Battery use you can see what has been using the battery.

It gives you Up Time and Awake Time. Just divide Awake Time by Up Time and that's your percentage Awake.

My phone has been 100% Awake since Feb/Mar when I installed Good Technologies email client. I didn't see any difference in battery life going from 10 to 15% Awake Time before installation to 100% after. I had been getting 30-36 hours between charges before and I got the same after.
