I have the gmail app installed. I use it as my only email app. It is set to auto sync. Does the push gmail use up a lot of battery? Is it better for battery life to use an app like K-9 mail which syncs at intervals ?

To be honest I have always used gmail and have never noticed any significant battery drain.
Gmail is even better now they finally updated with pinch to zoom.
However, battery life always depend on what apps/widgets/settings you have on your phone.
It all depends on your network and/or your Wi-Fi signal. If you're struggling for a decent signal all apps and widgets that sync and pull or push information from the cloud will drain battery. A decent signal strength has significant advantages for battery life.
