If I have Gmail set to autosync, but have 3G (and WiFi and 4G) turned off, does this drain the battery when it tries to sync, or does it just not sync? I'd rather not have to manually turn off all syncing when I want to go off the network for a while.

As far as I know, everything happens according to your settings. However, even if you have phone set up to sync Google, lets say, you should be able to get into Accounts & Sync and toggle the Auto-sync to off (take the checkmark out of the box) so the phone doesn't just try and try and try to sync, and that WILL drain your battery. If taking that checkmark out of the box doesn't work, you'll have to take care of all of the syncing disabling manually. That is what I've done since the very beginning, but to each his/her own. :)
