Hi

When ICS eventually arrives for my ncf S2 will it wipe installed apps etc. from the phone ?

Can I back them up or do I need to download them all again ?

thanks

It totally depends upon your method of update.

Since you will be upgrading from gingerbread to ICS I strongly recommend you to do a full wipe when you upgrade.

Full wipe guide.

To backup apps using titanium backup you need to have a rooted phone.
I also recommend having your contacts and text messages backed up using the many free apps available on the Play market.

Thanks - my phone isn't rooted.

Is this done after or before the (via Kies) upgrade ?

Does this wipe get rid of all the preinstalled apps as well ? Will I have to reinstall them all afterwards ?

If I can't use Titanium backup, will I be able to redownload paid-for apps without having to pay again ?

Rooting voids your warranty and is for advanced users only. please exercise caution if you choose to root.

By "this" do you mean wipe? If you are on the stock os and recovery I don't think it would be possible for you to do the wipe properly.
All info regarding the wipe is there on the guide I posted earlier, if you need help interpreting it feel free to ask.

A wipe does not rid the preinstalled apps only user apps.

If you are only worried about the paid apps, do not worry, you can re download them from the Play store without having to purchase again. Once you pay for an app the info is stored on the google server so that you need not pay again :)

Hope you get the official update soon and it goes without any hitches. :)

Thanks again

So if I don't want to Root the phone & use conventional upgrade of "official" ICS via Kies then I shouldn't worry about the Full Wipe - just let Kies update the phone ?

Will this method wipe contacts, calendar etc. ?

My advice to you is that follow these steps when you get the official update via Kies.

  • Reboot into android recovery. (To reboot into recovery mode switch off your phone and then hold volume up + home button + power button and don't let go of the 3 buttons till you see the recovery menu)
  • scroll down to wipe data factory reset using volume buttons
  • select it using the home button
  • select yes
  • reboot device

once you are rebooted just follow the steps as in on a new phone.
Restore your contacts and apps from your google account.

Keep your calender and contacts synced with your google account from now only, so you will never have to worry about losing the data.
