thanx for the link. i saw it earlier on my phone, but never got around to reading it. almost forgot about it, until now.
well i can confirm that on my note 8 this app "update for samsung" is off the play store.....thank goodness.
Can't view the article, I'm only getting a broken CAPTCHA.
No captcha for me.
Could be an extra security layer for a specific region?
Thanks I will re read this later, when I have time.
Probably because you're in China. Can you use an American VPN address? It's working for me.
Yeh it seems to be a US only site. That also blocks VPN access. I'm just seeing one of those picture CAPTCHAs that never seems to work correctly.
Anyone care to post what it actually says?
It's a long article, and for copyright reasons I don't think we can post it in its entirety. The article references some other articles, including this one that revealed the issue, and this one that first reported it.
See if those work for you; if not, I'll try to summarize the issue.
Sorry Mike, but ^^^that's the deal.
Anyway, gist of the article, someone made an app called "Updates for Samsung" and was able to get it published in Play. While it lets you search for firmware updates, it also includes a lot of not nice stuff. It isn't published by Samsung, so a basic sense of skepticism would seem to be enough to keep most people safe IMO, but what do I know.
I've seen that app and just looking at everything it looked sketchy. I've had Samsung long enough to know to stay away.
