I seem to be stuck on this......

I have checked my email address in android market place everything appears to be fine. It just stalls...

i have the same problem and am planning to do a factory reset. however, i'm not sure whether my contacts are saved in my sd card or the phone itself... do you know how I can check?

If you have the "Backup to SD card" ticked, will this option not back it all up for you??

Nofear - as Case said, that will be causing the issue :-( You either need to hard reset your phone, OR change your e-mail address back to googlemail.com :-( (As far as I'm aware these are the only 2 options, although I *think* - don't quote me on it!!! Google are looking at a fix?!)

I did a hard reset. Really frustrating.

I preferred gmail, over googlemail.

Interestingly, my G-Talk account still reverts to googlemail.com

You can use @gmail regardless I have found, I've been using googlemail (site) for years and always have my email address as @gmail

A hard reset is NOT required when changing your @googlemail.com account to @gmail.com. Or changing your googlemail account in general. Just follow the tip below.

Go to Setting -> Applications -> Manage Applications

Select "Google Mail"
Press "Clear data"

Now go back to the home screen and open Google Mail. You will be presented with the setup wizard to enter your google account details. You phone will then resync with the new account details.

Downloads will work again after that.

The "clear data" route didn't work for me - but I'd already set up my gmail account as my second google mail account. After clearing it didn't go into the wizard but just gave me a choice of which account I wanted to use. Curses?
So now -factory reset or wait for google to find a fix?

Ok. I cleared data on Google Apps & Google Mail. However, I only had the one account configured and not sure how having two acounts setup might affect this. I'm my opinion, it should not.

Hmm, when I change back to googlemail it appears to stick everywhere except in the Google Account settings and I still get those annoying Talk alerts and can't download anything from the Marketplace.

Just had this problem today! Switched to Gmail this morning and have been sweating all afternoon trying to figure out why I couldn't update any apps!

Got on the PC, changed my account back to Googlemail and turned my phone off then on.

Apps started downloading straight away! Phew!
