Droid 1 Root

Having difficulty rooting my droid, I have downloaded several update.zip's.
when labeled "update.zip" it automatically fails, When I label it just "update" it get the following:
asserted failed, error in /sdcard/update.zip
(status 7)
Installation aborted.

also is there an easy way to uninstall factory stock apps??
