Just received my first droid phone the other day. I reset to factory, then downloaded all of the updates from Verizon. I later read that you shouldn't root the phone if you've done all of the updates through Verizon because it'll brick the phone.

I'm new to the lingo and using ROMS. I want to use this phone to learn though. Can I revert back to an earlier version of the UI, then root and install a custom ROM, or have I stuck myself with a stock phone. Suggestions, links to guides, anything would be a help at this point. I can't seem to find the answers I've been looking for. Hardly anything on the phone at this point. Everything is completely recoverable if it needs a clean wipe.

Thanks in advance and I'm sorry if this is the wrong place in the forum to place this.

    Update:

I see the post a few posts down from this one since my original was moved here to ALL Things Root. I'll give that method a try. Wish this noob luck.

All of the links I've tried have said that the download was not available. Would love to use that one. Doesn't seem to be an option ATM though. Still looking for a working link. From there I might stumble around for a minute figuring things out, fun none-the-less.

on screen root instructions, said that it would reboot phone, to android recovery, then you need to press both volume buttons to enter
    then wipe cache and reboot

sometimes d2s when rebooted, and usb is connected, will go to bootloader
    just disconnect usb, and reboot

rebooted, brought up sys info. says that I still have 2.3.4/4.5.621. I assume that means I must have done something wrong.

rooting only gives you access to system files and settings
it does not change the system version

now that phone is rooted, install droid 2 bootstrap, and make a nandroid
then backup apps with titanium backup or rom tool box
then you can try a custom rom some links in my list
sd_shadow's list of links for Droid FAQs, SBF, Rooting, ROMs.... https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Goawxdx_UBF4Y8lqzHYWf8Ha3yUcRK4faq0UWIlXLWA/edit

OK, did a bootstrap recovery and a Titanium backup. Now off to the roms. I've been looking at Cyanogen's.
