Long time lurker, first time poster. Hopefully this will make sense. For the last two months I've been using my Droid 2 fine, charging off the wall plug and charging off the USB cables on two different computers (one Windows, one Ubuntu). The phone is not rooted and not damaged (not dropped, no water damage, etc).

A few days ago I noticed it getting hotter than normal and staying hot even when I was not doing anything. By hot, I don't mean pian but hot enough to make me not want to keep it in my pocket. I downloaded OS monitor from the market and confirmed the CPU was not busy but the phone stayed hot. I wrote it off as a fluke and sure enough a day later it was not happening.

Shortly after that, I noticed that the phone was no longer charging while it was on _and_ connected to the USB cable. Here is the kicker (and the reason for the "kind of" in the title). If the phone is off, the phone charges (the white light comes on) but only enough to boot, stop charging, and turn itself off again.

Here is the sequence. I unplug my phone from the wall in the morning, 100% charged. When I get to work, I plug in the USB cable and leave the phone on. The battery icon does not change to charging like it used to. OS Monitor reports that the phone is on USB power but the battery is still discharging (and the white light on the side is not on). Basically by mid-afternoon I get the 15% warning followed by the 5% warning and the phone shuts off. THEN THE WHITE LIGHT COMES ON and in about an hour it tries to boot again. During the boot, the white light turns off, I get to the home screen and the phone immediately displays that it is shutting down. The cycle repeats itself until I get home and plug in the wall charger. Rinse, wash, and repeat the next day and this has been going on for a few days now.

Any thoughts? It is almost like the phone is intentionally not charging from USB even though it is set to charge only, via the USB notification, when I first plug it in when I get to work.

The only other two things that have happened in this time, that I cannot tie to this issue, are that my data usage has skyrocketed and I can't mount the phone anymore. I used 1.2GB in one week where last month I only used 800mb total. I have not installed anything new so I cannot account for the increase. Also, I can no longer mount the phone on my computers anymore either. In the past it would mount on both my Ubuntu and Windows computers and charge all at the same time. Now, neither happens but I know the phone realizes it is plugged into a computer...

Sounds like a bad app or combination of apps, and possibly something malicious (though that's fairly unlikely). If it was my phone, I'd SBF back to stock, do the updates, then start adding my apps back, one at a time.

I'll give it a try. Anyone know of an app that can generate a list of what you customized/installed? Looking to bring it back as closly as I can to what it is today, but one by one so I can see what the offending application may or may not be...

Also, does a hard reset wipe data on the sd card? I'm concerned about the pictures I've taken...

NVM. Found the list at the Android Market. Gonna try a hard reset now...

I don't think a hard reset will wipe the SD card, but you can always remove it before you do the hard reset to be sure.

Bummer. Hard reset and the same issue. The phone knows it is plugged in to a USB cable (the screen comes on and OS Monitor reports USB Power) but the phone refuses to charge or let itself be seen on my two computers. Tried different cables as well with no luck...

Gonna head to the Verizon Store tomorrow. At least I know getting back to where I was after a hard reset, or getting a new phone, does not take long. TY cloud. ;)
