    Hi. App question.

My Sister went with the DROID 3 and she loves it dearly. But she wants too do more. Is the Smart Actions app available for the DROID 3? She likes the fact that my RAZR can do it more with that app then her by herself.

If not, anything close to it she might like?

I think Smart Actions is a Motorola built in feature not an actual available app?

No need to apologize, with the amount of forums we have here, it can be a little overwhelming. It was quite relevant where it was, but you'll probably get a better answer here.

    What exactly is Smart Actions?

It is an app that I know the DROID RAZR has, but was wondering if the DROID 3 could get it or a similar version.

Smart Actions is an app that you can use to set your phone to do things like turn off WiFi when not needed, turn of ringer at certain locations you set, vibrate when you sleep at night, automatically turn on your news app in the morning, shutdown selected outputs such as background data sync or wireless internet, turn on music when headphones are detected and more. A very nice app to have. Almost like having your own personal assistant.

    Google it for RAZR.

Ooh now you've piqued my interest :D What about it do you think is better? This sounds like a cool app -- a rare thing with moto-blur type stuff :)

Cause I already checked out Tasker. It comes no where near to the things Smart Actions can do. With this app, you can also program various things, custom ones, or take from samples. It even gives you suggestions when you do certain things. Hell, if you wanted your phone to stop all services from
11:00 am to 7:00 pm like cellular, WiFi and internet, this app can do that.

Only one problem with it, otherwise I really like it.

I'll admit that my exposure to Smart Actions is limited to my time playing with a RAZR display model in a Verizon store, but I'd be shocked if there's anything that Smart Actions can do that Tasker can't do. And if such a thing exists, it's probably because Smart Actions is a system app and Tasker is a user app.

If I'm missing something something, I'd like to know. I'm seriously interested to know what you think makes Smart Actions better than Tasker.

Go to a Verizon Wireless store, check it out in a DROID RAZR and see the difference. It gives you more choices for triggers for multiple actions you want.

OP, Smart Actions, AFAIK, its unique to the RAZR. The best anyone else can hope for (rooting aside), is Tasker.

So Tasker is the only way to go for other phones then?

AuromateIt is an easier to use, albeit stripped down, version of what Tasker does. But you are likely stuck with something 3rd party, yes.

Far from it. Automateit (mentioned by RyanB), Llama and Locale are just a few of the alternatives. Automateit and Llama also offer free versions.

According to this video, Smart Action triggers are:
    • Location
    • Timeframe
    • Charging
    • Display
    • Headphones
    • Incoming Calls
    • Missed Calls
    • Wifi Connection
    • Bluetooth Connection
    • Motion Detector

In contrast, this is Tasker's list:
    • Current Application
    • Time/Day
    • Location
    • Calendar Entry
    • Unread SMS sender or content
    • Docked State (car/desk/none)
    • Headset Plugged
    • Keyboard Out
    • Media Button
    • USB Plugged
    • Airplane Mode
    • Bluetooth Connected
    • Mobile Network (2G/3G/4G)
    • Wifi Connected
    • Wifi Near (proximity, without needing a connection)
    • Cell (tower) Near
    • Incoming Call
    • Missed Call
    • Signal Strength
    • Battery Level
    • Power (charging)
    • Light Level
    • Orientation
    • Proximity Sensor
    • Variable Value
    • Alarm Clock (about to sound)
    • Alarm Done (dismissed/snoozed)
    • Display (off/on/unlocked)
    • File (opened/closed/moved/deleted/modified/attribute change)
    • Camera Button
    • Search Button
    • SD Card (mounted/unmounted/removed)
    • SMS (received/sending success/sending failure)
    • Battery (changed level/full/overheating)
    • Gesture (motion)
    • Shake
    • Device boot/shutdown
    • Device Storage Low
    • Locale Changed
    • Package (app) installed/removed/updated
    • Wallpaper Changed
    • Button Clicked
    • Notification (appeared/was clicked)
    • Variable (cleared/set)
    • Third party support (Gentle Alarm, K9 Email, Kaloer Clock, OpenWatch, Pomodroido, Radardroid, Reddit Notify, Screebl, Widget Locker)

Without standing in a Verizon store for as long as it takes, I can't go into as much detail on Smart Actions as I can on Tasker, but IMO, Smart Actions just doesn't measure up.

Grim, have you tried Tasker? You seem quite confident in its ability, despite it having significantly fewer triggers.

    • Launch Web Site
    • Display Timeout
    • GPS
    • Wifi
    • Bluetooth
    • Background Sync
    • Airplane Mode
    • Cellular Data

    And for Tasker:
    • Flash (flash a message on the screen)
    • Menu (popup a menu with a list of options, and perform other actions based on the option selected)
    • Notify (with sound/vibration/led)
    • Popup (popup a message on the screen - different from "flash")
    • Torch (turn on the camera flash, as a flashlight)

    • Calendar Insert (insert an event)
    • Go Home (go to home screen)

    • Set Alarm (in the Alarm Clock app)
    • Alarm volume, bluetooth voice volume, DTMF volume, in-call volume, media volume, mic mute, notification volume, ringer volume, silent mode, sound effects (enable/disable), speakerphone (enable/disable), system volume, vibrate on notify, vibrate on ringer
    • Haptic feedback (enable/disable)
    • Auto brightness, display brightness, display rotation, display timeout, keyguard, night mode, stay on (keep screen on with power), wallpaper, status bar
    • Car Mode
    • Lock (screen)
    • Encrypt/decrypt files/directories
    • Create/delete/move files/directories
    • Read/write files
    • Zip/unzip files
    • Open/close any of 30 settings dialogs
    • Get Voice (use voice for text input)
    • Open the software keyboard
    • Open voice commands
    • Set default ringtone
    • Simulate media button presses (i.e. next, pause, stop, etc.)
    • Music play (single file, or directory)
    • Photo (take a photo)
    • Play a ringtone/alarm/notification
    • Record Audio
    • Enable/disable GPS
    • Get the current location

    • Enable/disable airplane mode, auto-sync, bluetooth, USB tether, Wifi tether, Wifi, Mobile Data, bluetooth voice communication
    • Browse a URL
    • Set the bluetooth ID
    • Compose an email
    • HTTP get/post
    • Set Wifi sleep policy
    • Call a number, block calls to a number, divert calls to a number to another number, end a call
    • Compose SMS/MMS
    • Send SMS (without user interaction)
    • Support 3rd party plugins compatible with Locale
    • Scenes (a graphical user interface containing elements which, when tapped, will execute a series of actions) - all user definable
    • Flow control logic to control which actions within a task are executed based on factors not related to the triggers which caused the actions to be executed in the first place (i.e. if, else, end if, goto, stop return, wait, wait until...)
    • Enable/disable profiles
    • User-definable variables, including arrays
    • 3rd party actions including Android Notifier, Astrid, BeyondPod, DailyRoads Voyager, Due Today, Gentle Alarm, JD APN, JD Status, NewsRob, OfficeTalk, SleepBot, SMS Backup+, TeslaLED, WidgetLocker

Plus, you can create shortcuts, widgets and timers on the home screen that will execute any set of actions you wish.

IMO, the only advantage Smart Actions has over Tasker is simplicity.
