I am due for an upgrade from Verizon and am going to go with a smartphone, I beleive. I currently do not own a smartphone, nor have I in the past. I'm not sure what I'm looking for or what I need so basically asking for some opinionated replies. I was looking at the Charge, Droid 3, HTC Incredible 2, or LG Revolution. Any suggestions? What should I get for my upgrade? Also, as of this date..does anyone suggest something else that Verizon carries. Droid versus Iphone?

And, I'd wait a month or two. None of those are too appealing with new phones due to come out. Out of those, though, I'd probably go Charge, mainly because it's 4G. There are so many factors to consider, however.

my bad..I meant LG revolution. So, if I were to wait the month or so that you suggest, what phone(s) that are upcoming would you recommend?

The Dinc2 is great rooted. Battery lasts all day of moderate use. It was free with upgrade thru Wirefly. I have another upgrade due about xmas. I plan on getting a LTE phone when my town gets it.

If you don't care about 4G then either Dinc2 or D3 are your best choices. They both have great battery life and they are fast. Biggest difference between those two, is the KB and UI. If you want or need 4G, then the droid charge is a great phone. I would not get the Revo. If you wait a little bit, you can get the Bionic which is another 4G phone for vzw.

What you should get depends on you. If you really have no idea then get out there and at least try some devices. People tend to have strong preferences for physical characteristics such as weight, size, form factor, screen, keyboard, "build quality", etc. Determine where you stand with those as they will help you to narrow down the options.

You should also look at the other "Which device should I get?" threads to see if there are any topics of discussion that might help you in determining what does or doesn't matter to you.

If you really just want the opinions of others (not the most effective way to shop) then refer to existing threads. There's plenty of existing discussion that you can read up on and no need to reinvent the wheel yet again for the nth time for someone asking for guidance. The latest devices all have discussion around them.

Whether it's your intent or not, threads like this always come across as:

"I'm new. I can't be bothered to do my own research. Figure it out for me and tell me what I should get."

Take some initiative. Read up. Even if you don't know anything you'll learn a lot just from reading. Even as an experienced user reading the forums are useful to me. What you'll get out of this is directly related to the effort you're willing to put into it.

I just upgraded to the Dinc2... my first smart phone. (I had a BB Tour for a few weeks back in 2009 and returned it.) A few days later, the Droid 3 came out and did a real close compare while I was in my first two week potential return period. My Verizon store contact was perfectly willing to swap out, but told me that after a few weeks, most people with real keyboards do not use them very much.

So I stayed with the Dinc2... I am loving it, although I am still learning my way around smartphones.

Well to your reply. I am new at this smartphone stuff. I have done numerous research on youtube and the verizon website on these phones. Everyone is opinionated, which is what helps my purchase decision. I am not a smartphone guru, nor am I tech savvy which is a reason for my asking of an opinionated discussion.

I am not familiar with KB, or UI..which is what an earlier reply mentioned. I read about the dual core or the pentile display on the D3 but I'm not exactly sure what this is referring to. Also, do I even need 4G? These are all things that i'm asking YOU all to help me out on. Who is the better manufacturer..LG, Samsung, Moto, HTC?

Is 4G necessary? I've been told that my area doesn't support it. If that's the case, then is it somethign I can even use? Also, what do you mean by KB and UI? Why do you say not to get the Revo? And again, what's LTE?

With the pentile display of the D3..I have read that it's got awesome display at a distance but becomes "pixely" up close. Has anyone came across this? Or agree?

I am one to shop on looks and features

I think you really have to be looking for it. The display to me looks great not as colorful as the Dinc2 but I think it's a really good display.

LTE is Verizon's 4G network and for me, it's not necessary even though I live in and around a 4G/LTE area. Verizon's LTE/4G has not yet fully expanded and won't do so until 2013. So if you don't live near or at a LTE/4G area, then no you can't use it.
KB= Keyboard, the Droid 3 has a Keyboard and the Inc doesn't.
UI= User Interface which the Droid 3 and Dinc2 have totally different interfaces. And I say, based on my opinion, not to get the Revo because I feel that it has nothing to offer that any other phone doesn't do better. It's not worth the money to me. It's the worse 4G device out of the ones that are out now. I'm not saying it's a horrible device but you just have better choices that's all.

How do you root a phone? I have no idea about what I am doing, so is this something I should mess with?

rooting is pretty much granting yourself admin permission to the phone. the first thing it will do is void your warranty, this will allow you much more customization from visual stuff and theming to custom software (ROMs), also gives you the ability to turn your phone into a shiny REALLY expensive paperweight. but rooting and loading a custom ROM is the absolute MOST you can get from your phone and if you are tech-savvy then it will be a fun filled adventure, however if you are not tech savvy, then i wouldn't advise doing so because there is risk involved. especially since all the phones in question are top of the line and a normal user would never see any "NEED" for it and youll probably never miss it.

honestly it comes down to whats important for you, 3G vs 4G, Hard KB vs Touch, Root vs Stock. display quality

i would take some time and research on the web, maybe go into the phones section on the forums here and see what the users have to complain about. (VZ reps arent always the most knowledgeable) then go into verizon and play with the phones, play some games and browse the web, watch some youtube videos and try to get a feel for them. it'll really come down to what you need but they are all good phones and top of the line. but know that by Christmas any choice will be a bit outdated and the new phones will be lookin better than an ice cream sandwich on a hot summer day.

if you want root then i would go with an HTC option, when i got my ally (ford fiesta of android phones) i thought i NEEDED a hard keyboard. but with swype and swiftkey beta/x it would be really easy to adjust to an all touch phone.

the Dinc2 would be my choice. 4G isnt all that important to me, got wifi at home and 3g is plenty fast for all my out and about needs. despite the higher resolution of the Droid3 i dont think that the image quality is any better than the others. but ive only spent a few minutes with each.

All three are very good choices. The thunderbolt is basically the bigger version of the dinc2 with 4G. However, the dinc2 is priced a lot lower than the thunderbolt so maybe that would be the decision maker for you.

Battery life is also sketchy on the TBolt, and it won't work overseas, whereas the DInc 2 and D3 will both work overseas. That might be useless to you, or it could be a big deal if you travel a lot.

(As you're doing your research you may also see them referred to as "world phones" or "dual band" or having a feature called "GSM." They all mean the same thing. GSM is just another flavor of wireless communication, and it's used around the world. Most Verizon phones use a different flavor of "radio" called "CDMA." Verizon's "world phones" have both types of radios in them, hence the term "dual-band" as well.)

(There are currently no Verizon "tri-band phones" that is, world phones that are also 4G. So for now, you have to pick.)

I know there must be 100 threads, so I don't want to start a new one. I do want to ask specific questions though related to "what should I choose."

I want a keyboard. I have fat fingers. Right now I own an LG Ally. Here are the issues I have: the processor is slow, it doesn't work in my house. I'm not in an LTE area, and won't be for a while. I won't be leaving the country so World Phone shouldn't matter.

I want to get a Droid 3, will I be happy with it? My wife's phone (Incredible) works fine in our living room. My Ally does not. A lot of things I've read say once I use Swype or Swiftkey I won't need the keyboard, but I'm hesitant. I use the web a lot (email, banking, Fantasy Football), I don't game, don't really take many pictures, no music. I guess what I mostly want is a fast processor, both for internet use and within the phone (my way old Voyager could send texts faster), a keyboard, and to make a damn call from my living room. Droid 3, or something else?

Sorry if I got to rambling, I got in the middle of a little rant there.

D3 is far superior then the Ally. If you need a kb, the D3 is your best option on VZW. Based on what you posted, you and a D3 will get along just fine. :)
