Every time you got the phone, did you get it from that same store? I would suggest this, although there is no reason to believe the store is cursed like I might be implying. Try a store far, far away from Houston. Logically, it would be best to get online. Not like the ones in that specific store are tainted or something, but try it straight from a warehouse and see how that goes. If stuff is still wrong, I dunno what to tell you. But a bad batch may have made its way into that store is causing problems for everyone in that region.

Yeah man, just hearing your story I can somewhat feel your frustration. Go back and tell there's still a problem. There's no reason to inconvenience yourself further and look elsewhere. Not sure whose fault it is, technically, but VZW needs to step up and fix it since there isn't exactly an HTC store you can go to. Get one more replacement and if there's a problem with that, call HTC immediately and drag them into it with VZW.

    Settings> Sound and Display>

all the way at the bottom, G-Sensor calibration.

Not sure that's even tied with the proximity sensor, but try it anyways. Get a flat table, and then recalibrate it. See if that helps.

If I were you, honestly, go for the Droid. If you can deal with its physical shortcomings, you'll have a phone that will last you a good two years until you're eligible for a new one (you may get one earlier than that, but...).

The Eris, as you may know, is a rebadged Hero. The Hero is on its way out and will be succeeded by the HTC Incredible, which will also be on VZW. Not sure how that's gonna work, but expect the Incredible to get all the attention and be supported for two more years as well (around as long as the Droid will be supported) before a successor to that is released.

The Droid has the better hardware and software and is NOT neglected like the Eris is. There's a reason the Eris is outdated, and it's because it's old crap painted gold (emphasis on the old part, it's still a reasonable phone, just very obsolete).

If you do decide to go for the Droid, make the bastards there pay for it. Don't pay the difference, they inconvenienced you. If need be, grab another Eris, pray something goes wrong, and tell them three Erises have busted on you (nasty) and you want to be compensated with another model. Let him suggest the Droid. Agree. And then make them pick up the tab. If it becomes an issue, call VZW headquarters and take it from the top-down.
