Droid Maxx 4.4 Not Getting Grouped Texts

I am trying to help a friend who is a proud owner of her first smartphone...the Droid Maxx. She and I have both verified that she is not getting text messages when they are sent to her. She is currently running 4.4 OS
I have checked the settings inside the default text app and the group MMS option is turned on. I have not tried to see if she can send grouped texts yet....but will try.
I tried using Hangouts App to see if there was just a problem with the other app. Same problem.
I read something somewhere

.that a person was having problem sending grouped texts while on WiFi....not sure if this is her issue or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
