Okay so yesterday I was at the Verizon store getting my Droid1 checked out and the tech support guy had a droid and we were talking about issues with the phone especially since the 2.2 update. He informed me that Verizon is planning on pushing a 2.2.1 patch update for Froyo but that may all get scrapped if 3.0 is released first. I then asked him if the droid would receive 3.0 since its processor doesn't meet the requirements but he said since the Droid's processor can be overclocked to 1.2 that the Droid is scheduled to receive the update to 3.0 and that the update will overclock the processor to meet the requirements.

Has anyone else heard anything similar or know if this is in fact true?

I still doubt VZW would try to bring 3.0 to the Droid. It's not just the processor speed, but the RAM as well. It will find its way onto the phone via custom ROMs, but I'm sincerely skeptical that it would come as an official update.

Especially considering all of the problems the 2.2 update has brought. I would say that the Droid can *safely* be overclocked to 800mhz across the board. My phone works fine at 1.25ghz, but a friend of mine's phone won't even boot with an 1100 kernel. If Verizon pushed an update that bootlooped around 30% of their phones, imagine the outrage.

This being said, it would be nice to see Verizon and Motorola continue to support the Droid past 2.2.

Gingerbread also requires 512MB of RAM, something the Droid doesn't have. I doubt VERY seriously if Verizon would release it for Droid 1 since the device is already scheduled for end-of-life. They're wanting to sell new phones, not give away software updates.

I think the Droid WILL get a version of Gingerbread, but it will come as a custom ROM, not an official OTA from Verizon. My 0.02

I would say that since the "tech" guy at the VZW store said it, it has to be a really bad rumor or completely false. just my opinion. I mean in the past, vzw has be bad about not telling anyone anything, even their own employees, and the store people generally find stuff out about 10 minutes before it happens, or even after it happens.

Those are recommended specs not required. It will be up to Motorola. 100% guarrantee there will be a custom rom though before any official release.

  6. also the tech kind of showed his ignorance on the matter.

"He informed me that Verizon is planning on pushing a 2.2.1 patch update for Froyo but that may all get scrapped if 3.0 is released first."

2.2.1 is already out and has been released on the nexus one. the droid 1 most likely wont get 3.0 outside of the Rom community, droid2 will get official update.

I have a fairly decent source inside VZW who said that the D1 will get 3.0. Full disclosure, he/she mentioned nothing about the phone being overclocked prior to, with, or post the update.

As someone who started their Android career with the Eris, and heard so many false reports from people who talked to "sources in VZW" and "tech support guys/girls" about updates to the phone and patches for serious screw-ups....I call BS.

It all depends on the kernel. Maybe Motorola can come up with a superior kernel that is stable on all Droids and can allow them to clock higher (but don't hold your breath). Also, do they really want to push out an official update that requires a higher clock speed? Droid battery life isn't great as it is, I don't think they would want to make it even worse for the average Droid users. But maybe they will do this... idk o_O

Completely understandable. I am not going to argue with anyone who disputes my post as I have nothing "official" to back it up with. That being said, I only made the post I did to contribute to the community and share what I "know." Which, when you examine this thread, is purely speculation. That is all...

I understand your reason for posting, as my reason was similar. Hey, you and the OP may end up being right in the end (I wouldn't mind that at all), but as I've learned in my sharing experiences here on AF and in life, I take all rumors with a (rather large one in most cases) grain of salt ;)

It might. There doesn't seem to be any official hardware requirements for the next iteration.

If it isn't officially released for the Droid, it'll be the source for the build of a future ROM.

Your VZW rep doesn't know shit. Never listen to them.

What is Gingerbread bringing to the table? Is there a list of features or upgrades or anything been released yet? What about leaked videos, pics,.......?

Everything is just a rumor at this point. If there are new features that are limited by hardware limits, they just won't be included. VZW claims the Droid did not have the hardware capabilities to handle tethering natively.

Fact or BS, I couldn't tell you. Rooting would probably get a lot of those features running again if the technicality is "running it natively."

I hope not the Droid is getting worse after every update, looks like 2.2 was a a very forced update since the Droid got so laggy after the update another one would virtually brick it I believe 256 RAM it's so low end nowadays and that's the main weakness the Droid have

I still don't get what "problems" people are having with 2.2? I'm thinking some of y'all have some bad apps on the phone because my 2.2 is issue-free (knock on wood). But as far as 3.0 on the D1, the only way we're getting it is through a custom ROM and likely a pared down one at that. The RAM requirements just simply aren't there. I think the dude at the VZW store was hopefully (but ignorantly) optimistic. I laughed a little when you said the "tech" guy at VZW. There aren't any tech guys at VZW; they barely know how to port numbers over from one phone to another.

Dunno. I've been running custom ROM's since the pre-Froyo days. Haven't had any problems with the Froyo-based ROM's. Haven't touched the official update.

Most of the people who upgraded to Droid 1 should be coming up on their "new every 2" anyway. ( I know I have 9 months) Lord knows how advanced everything will be by then!I love my droid and will never go back to "just a phone".

Supposedly Gingerbread will completely revamp the UI to make it more fluid, more intuitive and overall better. It erases the need for third party UIs like Motoblur and Sense (though they're fighting tooth & nail to stay relevant). It will very helpful for large, high resolution platforms like the coming Android tablet... but what it can do for smaller platforms like the Droid remains to be seen. This is all speculation, of course... but there is talk that Gingerbread is going to be Android 2.3 or 2.5, while 3.0 will be Honeycomb. Where our Droid draws the line will be hardware requirements and the limitations of our beloved developers.

I got my Droid Jul 1, before I joined here and found out about upcoming phones. So i have to wait until 3/2011 for my NE2.

You can get a subsidized new phone every year (11 months) with Verizon, you just won't get an extra $100 off with NE2.

I know.. but to me, that is not NE2. NE2 is NE2... no NE1 with no $100

I want to wait frankly. What comes out then will be killer I am sure and what I have now is so bada$$, I can keep it for 2 no problem. Hell, I held on to Palms for years and years and years.. the D1 will suffice

Heh well you are talking to the guy who held onto his Motorolla Q until the Droid came out so I am with you :)

The great thing about the Droid is that it still more than suffices. So far there isn't anything a Droid can't run.
