I have had great luck buying used phones on Ebay. Make sure they will allow you to return it if you are dissatisified with it and make sure the seller has a great rating. Ebay protects their customers from sleezy sellers.

Thanks. I was worried about purchasing one and then being unable to activate due reported stolen ESN or something. This gives me slightly more confidence...

Well if you are on a family plan, and your family member ok's it, you can steal their upgrade option if they don't need it. I just did that with my dad. He is ok with his phone even after 2 years, so he gave me his upgrade for my #.
