So is this a totally unlocked dual-mode CDMA/GSM phone? Will a phone purchased from the Play Store be able to be activated on Sprint or is Sprint getting a CDMA only variant?

Second question is regarding Hangouts. Will Hangouts on KitKat get the SIM-Free calling feature that iOS recently got?

Yes it will work on all supported carriers no matter if you buy it from the Play Store or not. It was already conformed and there is a thread for it.
