    Hi,

I am having a strange problem with a Samsung Mesmerize.

I am using the stock email app to connect to an Exchange Server with Activesync. All works fine except when it comes to downloading xls attachments. For some reason, when I try to download an xls attachment, it will not download the entire attachment. For example, I'll get a 100k attachment, choose to save it, and it will save a 32k file.

Downloading all other types of attachments (pdf, doc, etc) works fine.

    Phone is running 2.2.1 stock.

That's quite odd. I know that Mesmerize has the capability of running .xlsx files, but perhaps it cannot read the basic .xls? Have you tried saving the file as an .xlsx and then sending it to your phone?

Actually, I just tried that - opened the file in excel 2010, saved as .xlsx and emailed it back and it opened fine. There must be a setting somewhere that's causing this issue because the problem is arising because the .xls attachment isn't being completely downloaded.

Well I'm glad it worked out for you, then. I don't know much about the ThinkFree Office suite on the Mesmerize, but that's quite the conundrum that it can open .xlsx files and .xls.

    Must continue to ponder...

It may simply be a glitch with thinkfree. If the "save as" workaround you stumbled on is too inefficient, try downloading a 3rd party app that can read Office documents. That will probably open just about any valid Office format.

I tried a few different office apps. None could open the .xls file. The issue seems to be with the email app not completely downloading the xls attachment, since when I have the email app save the attachment, the file size is always smaller than the actual attachment.

What email app are you using? If you're using the stock app, try downloading K9 mail and see if that gives you the same error.

I figured out that for some reason or another the stock email apps do not recognize the .xls files as actual files and places them in the 'unknown' category and gives them a preset file size for the phone to see. As an effect of this the phone cannot read the 'unknown' file and thinks its one of those defaulted program icons that when you try to open them ask "What program would you like to open this with?"

Again, this is what I figured.
