i know this is probably a very noobish question but i am a relative noob with my x. when i receive an email i get an alert from gmail (my personal email account) but then i also get one from the email that came on the X (you know, the email symbol with the red @ in an envelope) now if i were to uninstall that app would it effect my being able to receive emails from gmail?

The Gmail and email apps are separate. When you set up your phone with your Gmail account, it set up the Gmail app that comes with the phone. You must've also set up your Gmail account with the regular email app, which isn't necessary. You can delete that account without any issues.
