Just bought an Android textbook and tried to access my email account,which is shaw mail, server POP3, Port 110.

I get the message "Couldn't Finish"
"Couldn't open connection to server"

My question:
If I can access the internet from my textbook, should I also be able to access my email account?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Although I am not familiar with your device, is there an option to add an email account?
Can you connect with wifi and try it? Is your signal strength good?
What device is that as I am not really sure what the Android textbook is
