Recently purchased a Galaxy A3 running Lolipop 5.0.2. Decided to encrypt it as my previous phone was stolen.
First thing i did after purchase was a factory reset (purchased the phone second hand) and then encrypted it.

In stark contrast to the "Encryption may take an hour or more" message you receive, the process seemed to be instantaneous. After a quick reboot, i entered the password i set during encryption and everything seemed to be fine. Is this encryption speed normal for a phone which has just been factory reset, and will any data saved on the phone from now on be encrypted?

Yes, you didn't have anything on it besides the OS and pre installed bloatware so it wouldn't take long at all.

Yes Data will be stored on your device, but it will be encrypted, that is why you encrypt your device after all.
