    Hey guys!

So I have a bit of a problem. I recently acquired an Epic 4G that my dad had a friend of his try to root. I'm not sure what went wrong, but he says that they've had a hell of a time trying to unroot it. In the end, he bought a new phone and said I could have his old one.

I'll try to be as clear as possible regarding what is happening, I've never done anything like rooting before, so this is all very foreign to me.

The phone powers on normally, all the way up to the Galaxy "S" symbol where it just sits for 30 or so seconds before vibrating and then turning black. It appears to not be a brick, which I'm hoping is good news, however I don't know what I need to do to get this thing in working order.

I went to Samsung.com and downloaded the Epic 4G Driver that was provided so my computer would recognize the phone, but when I put the phone in download mode (1 + Power) my computer doesn't seem to find anything attached.
(EDIT) I reattached the phone and my computer installed two different things:
    SAMSUNG USB Composite Device
    SAMSUNG Mobile Modem

I was hoping you guys could plainly and simply walk me through the steps to getting this bastard fixed. I would really appreciate as I know nothing at all about resetting the phone. Feel free to ask me any questions if my description was too vague, I'll answer as best as I can.
