Eris "People" aka Contacts - No pictures (Avatar)

I am wondering why contacts in my "People" application on HTC Eris do not show their picture if they registered one with Google. I have friends with Google accounts and from a desktop computer I see their Avatar but not on phone?

It should, mine does...also, syncs with Facebook pics

I typed all my contacts into google mail rather than deal with trying to import from my old phone... the contacts came in with no problem, I never did set any pictures for them, but I did spend the time synchronizing them with facebook and the fb pics display perfectly in People.
