Yeah, I guess so. But for those that don't really care about the hardware specs and just want 2.1, it may not make sense. Of course, you may need the better hardware to run 2.1 smoothly, but then money becomes an issue and the Eris seems like a better option...unless it's running 1.5, then 70-80 bucks more seems worth it.

I would just root, overclock a little bit (if necessary), and run apps off of my SD card (rendering the memory limit irrelevant in some aspects, except for apps that you want to run faster than others).

2.1 will come. Root is a much tougher situation. I'd be happy without root, but 2.x.

The code IS cleaner, and I believe that the phone will operate faster and less laggy. I hope that this pans out.

Not sure. Droid is VZW's competitor to T-Mobile's Nexus One, although not a particularly strong one. To send 2.1 to the Eris a week or two weeks after the Droid just makes VZW just look dumb. Just wait until the end of March. There's less of a chance of disappointment there.

seems like all we can do is wait. It just sucks cause we don't have root OR a newer OS

I agree. If you want to save money and don't mind living with last generation hardware then the Eris is an excellent choice. I personally love it. It has been a breathe of fresh air compared to my touch pro (a solid phone and good for hacking/tinkering, but it shows its age). 2.1 should run smoothly since yes it is cleaner code, but also many of the extra visual bells and whistles will most likely be removed. The Motorola Droid is not slated to receive the animated wallpaper nor the wrap around app list. If someone deemed the Motorola Droid as incapable of handling those features, the Eris will certainly not receive them.

I saw some more new live wallpapers on the N1 today and my heart sank. Although, if this thing is ever rooted, who's the say they won't add it in a custom ROM? If you can remove Sense from an Eris or put it on to a Droid, why not throw in the the wallpapers? It may not be good with the hardware, but it may still work, especially if we can overclock it just enough. The Droid, I read somewhere, when overclocked, is faster than an N1. It's dangerous at that level, but it can be done. So we have hope still, unless some ROM developer has already made up his mind on this issue.

The Hero runs the same hardware as the Eris and it has live wallpapers. So after we get root it shouldn't be a problem.

Animated wallpapers would be cool, but wouldn't that just be one more thing eating up the battery?

That's why that, as well as overclocking, speaker volume, and all that other crap, are going to be optional so that you can choose whether you want to do it or not.

I figured I just wondered why a lot of people would want this feature. It is cool, but with the battery being the way it is I wouldn't think so many people would want the option. I guess it would be nice just to have the option though.

Well, hopefully, they'll be able to iron things out in the upgrade to extend battery life a bit. Fingers crossed...

Yea. I just ordered the 1750 battery too. This phone may be one that I'll keep for more than a year if they get it all worked out.

That's actually very encouraging, and it proves that numbers don't always tell the whole story. So if this is the case, I wonder who (motorola or verizon) decided to exclude the animated wallpapers from the Droid? If it was Motorola then we may still have hope. If it was Verizon, then we are certainly screwed.

The animated wallpaper looks great but i wonder how much extra battery it will eat up? Not to mention if it will lag the phone any.
