Root Evo 4g unrevoked help!

Alright so this is the first time ive tried rooting before...and I'm failing miserably..
hopefully someone could help.

Ok so here's what I've done so far..

I downloaded the latest version of unrevoked, installed the drivers on my phone, deleted htc sync from my computer, factory reset my phone enabled usb debugging and that didn't work, i get "firmware to new" error. i was reading around and someone suggested downloading a previous version of unrevoked from a link provided and that didn't work. it walked me through the bootloaders screen to hboot usb and get stuck on "waiting for root (ok to reboot if this doesn't work)" or something like that. Ive factory reset like 5 times ive disconnected and connected like 5 times tried over and over like people suggested and that didn't work and now when i try to go back and install the drivers my phone doesn't even show up in the device manager, it connects fine under charging and disk drive mode but just doesn't show up on device manager..

please help, i have no idea what i'm doing lol

what is your hboot? power off (you may need to uncheck fastboot in settings) press and hold power+vol down
