Sprint gave me a month of the Hotspot to try, wanting something for home can't get DSL etc. Turned on my laptop and hotspot did a speed test and was only getting 512k down I am in 3G area, how do people run ps3 on these online with these speeds. I read online people are getting 1-2M down am I doing something wrong or do I need to do something to acheive these speeds.

You are not doing anything wrong. Those speeds sound about right. Cellular data networks are not the best choice for online gaming. I have gotten anywhere from 0.4 Mbps to 2 Mbps download speeds on 3g. In my opinion that is not suitable for XBox Live, PSN etc. Even on 4G, where I hit 9 Mbps consistently, pings are to high for online gaming. 100-140 ms pings on Wimax (I have seen 200-400 ms pings on 3G) compared to 40 ms pings on my home Wifi network. I would look for another alternative.
