Facebook Refresh interval

I am curios what the Facebook Refresh Interval means?

If I set this to Never will I still get my notifications?

The default appears to be set at one hour and i would like to lower the interval to save battery but i want to make sure i get my notifications.

I am also curios if this setting was there before the 2.0.1 upgrade. I don

I have my interval set to 30 minutes and I never get my updates. I haven't gotten the update yet. it's been there since day one.
