From his obit in the LA Times:

““He was the gentlest of giants,” Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, wrote of Mayhew on Twitter. “A big man with an even bigger heart who never failed to make me smile & a loyal friend who I loved dearly. I'm grateful for the memories we shared & I'm a better man for just having known him.”

“Peter Mayhew was a kind and gentle man, possessed of great dignity and noble character,” Ford said in a statement. “These aspects of his own personality, plus his wit and grace, he brought to Chewbacca. We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him. He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience.”

Mayhew is survived by his wife, Angie, and three children.”

I'm not familiar with Rachel Held Evans, but apparently she was a Christian writer/blogger.

It's tragic to die so young.

Comedian and Entertainer Freddie Starr has passed in Spain at 76.

A little out there, but definitely a Starr.

That's debunked in this article about Freddie Starr's death.

    RIP, Freddie.

I believe that was an urban legend, perpetuated by The Sun. But it did inspire some games at the time.

Most people knew it wss debunked, I think.
Perhaps the wrong thing to bring up at this time, but it would stir some memories of him for some and it endeared him or made people look at him with fondness in later years.

Not what you meant I'm sure, and thanks for the article. He wasn't my complete cup of tea, but he wasn't big in Ireland, and I came to the UK in 87.

@MoodyBlues very sad and seemingly unfair last 10 years of his life, having read that now I'm awake.

Art Kunkin, the pied piper of 1960s counterculture in L.A. as publisher of the LA Free Press, dies at 91.

I have super fond memories of the Freep, which I'd get at my favorite record store. It was eye-opening for a kid.

    RIP, Art...

Jim Fowler, naturalist who brought animals to TV on Wild Kingdom, dies at 89.

His spots on The Tonight Show were often hilarious, thanks to Johnny Carson's reactions to the animals.

RIP, Jim, and say hi to Johnny!

I remember watching Jim as a kid, he'd do all the wrangling while Marlin stayed a goodly distance away from the action. And Johnny Carson, just lol.

Peggy Lipton, who starred in Mod Squad, has died of cancer at 72.

I loved that show. It was truly groundbreaking.

RIP, Peggy. Thanks for showing the young me that women could do stereotypically male jobs just fine.

I just saw that, too. Doris Day Age 97.

I guess the key to longevity is hanging out with gay actors?

Yes, Doris Day has died, but she was much more than an actor and singer.

She holds a special place in my heart for her decades of working for animal rights. Her Doris Day Animal League, which I'm proudly a member of, has worked tirelessly for the animals since the year before I turned vegetarian, for ethical reasons.

Day will be sorely missed by all those who've looked to her for level-headed advocacy for other sentient beings. And we're blessed to have her acting and singing talents available for repeated enjoyment, now and in the future.

If you're feeling like adding flowers to her stars on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, she'd appreciate it much more if you donated to DDAL instead.

RIP, Doris. Thank you for using your fame to bring attention to the plight of animals suffering. And the next time I watch my favorite of your movies, The Man Who Knew Too Much, I'll remember the joy you brought so many through your talents.

    Edit: plural 'stars'
