I'm very sad to be posting this year's first entry: former NBA Commissioner, David Stern, has died at 77, apparently as a result of a brain hemorrhage he suffered last month.

RIP, Mr Stern, and thank you for revitalizing the NBA.

RIP Mr Stern..... even though you screwed my Lakers by not approving the Chris Paul trade to the Lakers. We could have had at least one more championship under our belt.

    ....I guess I forgive you.

I got over it, @ocnbrze, because our Lakers always find a way to prevail. Any one setback, in the scheme of things, doesn't keep them down for long.

I wanted to say more about David Stern. What he did for the NBA is nothing short of miraculous. He took a lowly league--whose deciding game in the finals was shown on tape delay!--to soaring new heights.

It's really not overstating things to say that the NBA, as we know it today--with its global presence to showplace arenas--is a direct result of Stern's vision and hard work. I can't thank him enough...

I'm gobsmacked after looking at the LA Times Obituaries page... So many deaths, and it's only the 2nd day of the year.

They include Don Larsen, the Yankee who pitched the only perfect World Series game in history; he died at 90. It pains me to post this, as one of our AF family is dealing with it, but Larsen died of esophageal cancer.

    There are three others:

"Sam Wyche, who guided the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl during the 1988 season by using a no-huddle offense, died Thursday at the age of 74."

    ------

"The 20-year-old son of television producer Jenji Kohan, who created the series “Orange Is the New Black,” died in a New Year’s Eve skiing accident in Utah, police said Thursday.

Charles Noxon was pronounced dead after skiing into a sign Tuesday on an intermediate-level trail at Park City Mountain resort, police said."

    -----

"Nick Gordon, partner of the late Bobbi Kristina Brown — the only daughter of the late Whitney Houston and singer Bobby Brown — is dead at the age of 30, his lawyer said Wednesday."

Legendary screenwriter/director Buck Henry has died. He was 89 and had suffered a heart attack.

Mr Henry's prolific career includes such notable movies as Catch-22, The Graduate, Heaven Can Wait, and the Baby Boomer TV favorite, Get Smart.

RIP, Mr Henry, and condolences to your loved ones.

By the way, your vision in the '60s of what life could look like was pretty spot on! Wristwatches with two-way communication...amazing. But what about that shoe phone?

Now that I've had a chance to read multiple articles, I see that Peart was battling glioblastoma. In the brain tumor community, we refer to that as 'oh my [blanking] God, not glioblastoma....' :(

Having lost a wife to cancer, I find reading about it very painful. I hope that changes.

It should, but it's going to take time. :)

You're still at the 'recent' end of the spectrum. Wait until there are more years behind you, and it should get easier. If it doesn't, there's no shame in seeking help.

It is not often that I am saddened by the passing of those in the limelight, but this one hits closer to the heart.

Would you like to share why? :) Personal connection, childhood idol, similar age...

I'm rarely really saddened by some famous person's death, but there have been a few that hit hard. By far, with no close second, the worst for me was John Lennon. He was my childhood idol; his songs and actions provoked thoughts/feelings my young mind hadn't explored; he not only met a violent, early death...but on my birthday. I was near-catatonic in the following days.

RUSH is one of my favorite all time bands. Personally, I think they are the best band, ever. By all accounts, Neil was a beautiful human being.

I'm sorry. :( It's hard losing someone who meant a lot to us, even if we didn't know them personally.

On AXS-TV, a favorite channel of mine, they've been replaying various shows in Peart's memory. Interviews, album creation, assorted stuff. You might want to take a look. On DirecTV it's on channel 340; I don't know about elsewhere.

On Deep Tracks it is non stop Rush 24/7 lately. And on Liquid metal Corridor of Covers they did a bunch of Rush covers, I fall in love with Rush lately. I know the pain man.

Actor John Karlen, who appeared in Dark Shadows and Cagney & Lacey, has died. He was 86, and died from heart failure in hospice care.

I was an avid viewer of both shows, although right now I can't recall him in the former. But he added much to the latter, portraying a caring and supportive husband and father.

RIP, Mr Karlen, and thanks for your many years of entertaining us.
