Help File Transfer

Hi all...this is my first post so I'm hoping someone can help me. Since upgrading to the latest version of Android when I plug my phone into my computer to transfer files using Android file transfer it says 'cannot access device storage, if the screen is locked unplug the device and unlock the screen and plug it in again'.....well my screen is not locked so I can't transfer any files.......Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Personally I gave up using cables a long time ago (other than charging) and use Drive and Dropbox to sync everything.
