I had several files in the 'Downloads' section of my tablet. Note, this is not the same as the Download folder, which I also have. Some of the files have been on my tablet for a while. Today, I navigated to the Downloads section and they are all gone. Any idea why this occurred and if I can recover the files. Help would be greatly appreciated.

I am using Chrome to download my files. All files downloaded are then saved in 'Downloads' section.

Ok. So the file structure is the same in Chrome along with the default Android file structure.
Do you have a "my files" app?
This should be your default file explorer. If not, just install a file explorer from the play store, open it and navigate to the downloads folder.
If nothing shows up then you have deleted the files. Forever.

I have a My Files app. That is where I kept the Downloads and accessed them.

While i was digging through my internal storage yesterday, I noticed something peculiar. I remember one of the files I had saved in the Downloads section that had also disappeared; it was a PDF and I had not saved it anywhere else on my tablet. I have the Adobe Acrobat app on my tablet and was hoping i could still find it. So, in the app I went to Files > On this Device and was scrolling through the list of files. Lo and behold, i found the PDF document, as well as some other documents that were only in my Downloads but disappeared recently. I could also open the file. If Adobe could open it, the question is, where are they? I can't find them doing a directory search in MyApps. But they exist, otherwise Acrobat could not open the file.

Are you sure they weren't saved to the cloud? Adobe acrobat may have saved them automatically to your cloud storage. You can also navigate to your Android folder, then look through each apps folder for the files
