    Hello all,

I just joined this forum as I would like to make a journey into the world that is Android. Essentially what I'm looking for is a mobile device to browse the web. The specifics are:

    • Max of 100 dollars to spend
    • Wifi connectivity
    • No contract with a carrier
    • Ability to access Google Chat and Facebook
    • I'm willing to buy used or slightly outdated devices (I just need basics)
I'm really interested in getting an android device and would love to have anyone's support.

    Thanks, zmoore93

    welcome to the forums.
almost every android phone will meet those criteria, I'd try looking in the classifieds section of the forums for a phone that meets your price point:

    Welcome to the forums.

You don't specify whether or not you want a phone or a tablet. The biggest problem is going to be that price point. You can find Chinese tablets for around that price like this Velocity Cruz thing, but frankly it will give you a horrible Android experience, especially for your first experience. You might be able to find an older phone on eBay or Craigslist, but again, they will be older, used devices that probably already have issues or reached their useful life.

Honestly, if you can up your budget a little, i'd recommend a B&N Nook for ~ $250 and then rooting it to gain full access to the market. It's WiFi only and has no GPS, camera or gyro, but it has a beautiful capacitive display and decent enough power.

You mentioned a Nook, so what are your thoughts on the White Novel 7? Those are rootable as well, really I'm looking for a very basic access to email, chat, and other mobile sites over wifi.

You also mentioned older phones: would I be able to use them without first activating on a network?

Thank you for your help by the way. [IMG]

EDIT: as for whether I won't a tablet or phone either is fine.

It has a smaller restive rather than capacitive screen and the spec's don't list system memory or android version so i'd be wary. It may not have access to the android market once rooted. I can't say for sure because I have no experience with that specific device. If rooted, it will be VERY basic.

If you mean by activating on a network, you mean as a phone, sure it will work wifi only. You can still connect to Google services such as gmail, calendar and sync.
