Today, I tried to update my Samsung Galaxy S2 (SGH-1727R) to ICS (Odin3 v.1.85), and when I ran the update Odin failed, my phone read "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again" while in Odin mode, I re-installed kies (, windows 7 x64) and kies was unable to recognize my device (using the cable my device came with, and after using the troubleshooting), I then attempted to uninstall kies, and install the drivers to no avail. I then tried to enter recovery mode on my phone, and had no result, and when I attempt to reboot the system but it always results in re-entering Odin mode with the same message. Finally, I attempted to flash a stock onto my phone, with odin unable to recognize my device.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: It appears my phone is in modem mode, still can't access recovery mode to switch out
EDIT 2: Stepped back my version of kies and phone can now be detected by Odin (still not kies)
EDIT 3: Tried the method from this thread, and got this result:
    Not sure if it helps
RESOLVED: I followed the steps from here
Not sure how to change thread title

    Hi there,

Upon scouring message boards all over the Internets, I feel that this is the closest situation to the problem I am also having. I too am using the Galaxy S2 (sgh-i727r) from Rogers. They recently released ICS finally and when I went to upgrade the firmware via Kies, the process froze at 50%. Since then, my phone has been stuck in Odin Mode (Firmware upgrade encountered an issue etc etc screen). My computer/Kies no longer recognize the phone at all. When I plug it in, Kies just says Connecting... infinitely.

I followed the steps above and even when I attempt to turn the phone on in download mode, and get the option to press volume up or volume down, both choices bring me back to the same Frimware upgrade error screen - thus Odin 1.85 doesn't recognize the phone.

I have tried rolling back my version of Kies to at least see if my computer will recognize the phone when it is plugged in but still no luck.

Feeling like I've exhausted most of my options here and am getting REALLY frustrated! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solved: Odin was able to recognize the device and I was able to TAR without going into download mode. Will retry installing ICS now.

I have got "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" problem when I tried to flush "Samsung Galaxy Tab 2" with "Bootloader" and "PDA" only (JB version), though the previous binary was ICS. That time Kies was unable to recognize my device. I think thus the version was not same and I tried to flush with only 2 files that's why I got that error. Then I flush my device with all 5 files(.pit, Bootloader, PDA, MODEM, CSC) of JB version and got my device works fine.

May be your problem will be different. But I get out from this problem with this steps that's why I share my opinion.

Hi, I just have the same problem. I first tried to root with SuperOneClick and bugged just in the beginning. So I'm now with that "Firmware upgrade encoutered an issue....'' Now I'm trying for several times with Odin with differents CFROOTs to root or at least come back to my previous phone settings and No result it's always written FAIL.... I'm in the same situation, my phone doesn't acces to the download or recovery page. It's always that "issue" thing.

Just to specify that my Kies doesn't recognize my phone but my Computer does (it installs the drivers).... Anything I can try otherwise?
