So I currently have an iPhone 3GS and want an android. Bad. iPhone has bored me to death and it is time for something new.

Anyway, I was planning on waiting for the new string of phones to come out (I'm on ATT), but now I saw the free Atrix deal at Best Buy through tomorrow.

Basically, I'm wondering if I should buy the Atrix or wait for the Galaxy S2. I like the smaller screen better (or so I think; I've only used the iPhone), but I also like the S2's supposed performance. I have never owned an android, so I don't know much about UI's. I know this is probably a biased place to ask this, but what do you think?

Galaxy S2 or Atrix? Or as long as I'm waiting should I wait for the next Nexus?

    Thanks!
    Alex

The atrix is a great phone. My boyfriend has one and he has been very pleased with it. Before you decide on anything, take a trip to the att store and figure out which is right for you. Each manufacturers has their own UI and you can find out which one you prefer. I would not recommend Samsung. I had the Captivate and it was the worst phone ever. They may have worked out the kinks in their software, but I wouldn't count on it.

i also heard from a friend of a friend that the gs2 actually literally gets hot.. not so hot that u burn yourself but u get what i mean. warm.

op, if you went down to check out both maybe you can chime in if you noticed this?

on paper the gs2 looks like the phone to get but from everyday use, i've heard samsungs got their issues. and this gs2 doesnt seem to be any different..

(im not trying to bash here, i was actually going to get rid of my atrix for a gs2 as well but once i started reading and hearing from friends in real life, i steered away)

Unfortunately I haven't made it to the ATT store yet, I'm pretty busy with work this week and planning for college Sunday. Im gonna try saturday. Also, the GS2 isn't out here yet so I'll just be checking out the Atrix.

i honestly think the galaxy s2 will blow any phone out of the waters that are out right now, but since the phone isn't contracted yet with a service provider, i would have to say getting the atrix 4g would be the cheaper option since you can only get the s2 unlocked for a huge chunk of money

You can always wait for the next "best" phone, but then you will never get anything. I just purchased the Atrix at a great price and it will be my phone for quite a while.

My biggest problem with the SGSII is that I have always had bad luck with Samsuck products and I know they will find a way to ruin it.

Plus Motorola is a company which has been making high quality mobile phones for decades. Stuff like call quality, reception etc they have DOWN. Even with hardware a notch below the shitty quality of Samsung, the Atrix is superior imo.

Well said dude. When my Liquid released in late '09, it had the best hardware of any Android device. That phone lasted me 1.5-2 years and was amazing throughout (tho after I put Froyo on there, it wasn't smooth but still usable). Expecting the Atrix to serve me better than that did (mainly due to Motorola's richer history of phones than Acer).

I just came over from Blackberry and have to say I am truly impressed with the Atrix. I have been hesitating for a while and did a lot of research. I was going to wait for the SGSII but decided the Atrix, especially at its price, was the way to go. Of course everyone must decide for themselves.

Motorola have been making every type of radio for decades - so it came as no surprise to me that Telstra - It's how we connect - Consumer, Business, Enterprise and Government recommend that SGSII for Metropolitan use and the Atrix for Rural use.

The Atrix GPS is amazing - GalaxyI had a woeful GPS (I haven't heard SGSII GPS assessments yet).

The Atrix 960x540 has 30% more pixels on the screen than the SGSII 800x480 display.

Those who like fluorescent blue sky and green grass rave about the SAMOLED display, those who like accurate skintones prefer the accurate colour 0f the Atrix.

I moved from an iPhone 3G to the Atrix 4G. The Atrix is incredible!!! Very fast and I'm blown away with how many apps are now in the Android Market. I did a contract extension with AT&T so I got the phone for $99. I highly recommend the Atrix. WRST the updates comment - all of the apps I've downloaded require you to check a box if you want to allow automatic updates. I've toggled on for all and have had no problems. If the auto updates occur too frequently, uninstall, re-install and don't check auto-update.

I finally got to do a side-by-side comparison in a phone shop.

Sure, the SGSII colours are very saturated. Then I turned the SGSII and the Atrix up to maximum brightness.

    The SGSII was bright

    Better processor speed: SG2
    Better battery life: Atrix (definitely)
    Compactness: Atrix 4G
    Overheating problems: SG2
    Price (Cheaper one): Atrix 4G
    Built in FM radio: SG2
    Screen resolution: Atrix 4G (definitely)
Camera: SG2, 8mp ---> However, it doesn't take great photos.

    Overall tradeoff: Atrix 4G (exactly)

It doesn't matter wheter to have 1.2 ghz or 1 ghz processor because no one does anything heavy with their phones.

I've been thinking about an Atrix too. I was considering the SGS2 but I really don't want a phone with a screen over 4 inches. I think it just starts looking ridiculous after that. Plus, I think a finger print scanner would be cool! My other option was to wait for the iPhone 5 but I currently have an iPhone 4 and I'm getting kind of bored with it.

That would depend on how many apps you have running in the background. (That includes the system apps to keep the phone working too.) For me, I am a heavy user. I don't play a lot of games, but I do use the GPS, stream music and movies, text, e-mail, creat/edit documents every no and then and a bunch of other stuff. My phone is my lap top. I have had only twice when I was at 100% of CPU usage. (I forgot what I was doing.) Phone never cut off, just slowed down.

don't fall for the qHD resolution on the atrix. While it looks great with black/white contrast, any prime colors look like crap because thanks to PENTILE (never again), only half the pixels can be used to display those colors and you see *black* pixels between which just enhances the low resolution look. Just look at the green battery indicator in the status bar to see what I mean. If you want a brighter screen (whites, anyway) with less battery use, then this is a good option. For everyone else, PENTILE is pointless.

When I first heard of the SGSII screen, I assumed 800x600 would look too pixelated on a 4.5" screen and the move to RGB stripe with SAMOLED+ wouldn't make up the difference, but after handling the sprint version in the store and comparing to my atrix, I gotta say it's not bad at all, and definitely better than the atrix screen.

for anyone doubting the inferiority of the atrix screen, just do a side-by-side with an RGB stripe LCD at qHD like on the EVO 3D or the sensation and look at any primary colors for the most dramatic effect.

And I had the Samsung Vibrant and it was, hands down, the worst phone I ever owned! If your choice is between these two, the choice is so simple, get the Atrix!

I really like this phone, (the Atrix) especially after I changed the launcher. It hasn't had an issue with me basically playing with it since I got it yesterday for 5 hours straight. It runs real smooth and I know Motorola is good about updates, something Samsung has had issues with in the past.
