evening folks, first post. I'm new to this whole smartphone thing but recently got an EVO. I understand how the whole rooting thing works and since unrevoked is up again it's seems pretty straightforward. My question is, after i get it rooted, how do i go about stripping out all the Sprint crap and get froyo running as the google gods intended?

I'll apologise in advance for posting a new thread on something that must have been covered elsewhere, but my search results have been clouded with old information from 2.1 roots. Thanks everyone for the help.

Yep, definitely try a new ROM, which will take care of all of the Sprint crap running around on your phone, and then some. I'd also try a new kernal. You should get Appbrain and download apps that you've targeted as well as root only apps. I'm still familiarizing myself with the phone, menus, capability, etc. I'll be organizing my screens next...good luck.

Choose a rom and flash that. One reason I like Fresh 3.2 is because the Sprint software has been removed for the most part. After that start looking at some of the software that is available only to root users, such as wireless tether, rom manager, etc.

i just rooted my phone 10minutes ago. i just wanted uncapped fps and overclocking capabilities nice and simple. i guess i want to flash netarchy-toastmod-4.1.8 CFS for kernal. so do i need to flash the stock 2.2 rooted rom too along with the kernal? or just the kernal is fine?

Yes and yes. Love the netarchy 4.1.8 kernal. Take off the Sprint bloatware (suggest Titanium) and you're on your way.

Is there a thread somewhere that details step-by-step how to root your phone and then what to do after? I want to root my EVO so bad i can taste it, but I'm scared to death that I'll end up bricking my phone. In a perfect world, I'd just have someone do it for me. Unfortunately, I am completely unable to find anyone in Middle Tennessee that is tech-savvy enough to do it.

As far as I understand it, you do the unrevoked thing, then flash a custom rom (still not real clear which one though), and then something about a kernal. Is that it or are there more steps. I'd love as much imput on this as humanly possible.

Hi Justify, I was where you are not more than a few weeks ago. I read a lot of stuff that just added confusion.
OK here is what you need to see:

Read this, as it helps, but some parts are a little outdated.
    http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/129648-quick-intro-rooting-those-new-rooting.html

As far as rooting, when I did it I created instructions based upon others instructions. So look here: (my instructions are on post #8)
    http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/180355-unrevoked-3-21-now-up.html

I have not flashed a custom ROM yet, not sure I will. (Not sure I feel comfortable enough to do it, or to want to.)
As far as a kernal goes, I'm not there yet either. But I'll keep reading.

I did install the WiFi tether, which was my main reason for rooting.
    http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/180576-wifi-tether-rooted-2-2-a.html

I will probably use "Titanium" to remove bloatware, after I do more reading and feel comfortable with it.

So I keep learning. This forum is great for that. Good luck.

I too am getting ready to take the leap... been researching for weeks. The best advice is to read, read, read.
