Quietly, a team of 4 Developers/Testers have been working in their labs day and night to produce the first truly open-source ROM since Cyanogen. Without using anything from outside sources this group has managed to re-invent the wheel several times, including the smallest bash shell to date able to be used on the android system, Vixie-Cron for low level task scheduling, Reboot option in the power control menu also allowing for rebooting into recovery, as well as a few other "under the hood" tweaks. The mastermind behind this rom, Austen Dicken(CVPCS), has finally deemed the current version 0.5.0 to be open to public beta. The name of this ROM you ask?

While CVPCS was hard at work putting bash into a car crusher. Todd Swindoll (Sniffle), who is well known in the android community for his beginning android compiling guide, has been hard at work on the accompanying site to this ROM. Not only is the ROM site now available, but also there is a wiki available with guides for adding some of these same features to your own "compiled from source" roms including his full original guide in wiki form, Busybox without having to modify source, and Superuser.apk and root while only modifying one source file, with more to come!

    (quote from CVPCS site)
    Special thanks to:
Todd(sniffle): for helping me from the beginning to present on this project, and never tiring of my constant talk over it
Evan(mayh3m): for helping me test EVERYTHING about my ROM, and the continual data/system wipes he no doubt had to endure
Corey(synik4l): for supporting me in this project as well as getting me in touch with many of the android developers
Pete(pete): for answering some of my questions and putting me in touch with several people
Koush: for his willingness to help me with bug fixes, as well as for all of the wonderful work he's done
Cyanogen: for all of his hard work that served as a guide to help me figure out the android build process
Alldroid.org: for graciously offering hosting space for the various files that are available on this site

I want to try this but I'm not sure if I would want to lose any 2.2 features. And if I I am not going to use it, why try it.

Wow...my comment to you would be that anyone working that hard to compile something like this should get some actual phone time with us "end users". I imagine their work wont stop with 2.1 ;)

sorry about the file being marked private that was a mis-click on my part,

the rom will be converted to froyo as soon as google releases the froyo source.

you can check here to see if it has been released: android.git.kernel.org Git - platform/manifest.git/summary

at the bottom of that page under heads there will be a froyo label indicating that froyo is available for download as a branch of android.

i'm excited about 2.2 as well, but am waiting for AOSP because sapphire will ALWAYS be built from source (no matter how much i hate staring at the cool new toys the hackers are rolling out), as it will result in a better product in the end.

that being said, i have heard that AOSP will get froyo the end of june (specifically 7:53pm on the 31st i believe), and although i don't necessarily believe the date and time, i would wager that a defined "push date" has internally been set by google, and that currently motorola and others are working to finish their modifications before that push date occurs.

that being said, i have a script checking hourly to see if froyo is on AOSP, and will be working on it the moment i hear from it :D

I'm not sure if this is serious or not, but I would just like to point out that there are only 30 days in June. :)

Yes! Another developer building ROMs from source. Oh, and by the way....

    screenshots?!?!?

Yes, I realize that screenshots reveal little to nothing about a ROM, but I just want to see some on GP.

Flashed it and first thought is that the reboot menu (via holding power button) is genius! Such a simple thing but eliminates 1 3rd party app for me...not to mention that I constantly have to search for the app when I want to reboot or reboot into recovery (which is often)...like that feature a lot!

Great ROM CVPCS and team (I believe it is: sniffle, mayh3m, synik4l). I really appreciate the hard work that you've put into this by building from the source code. I glanced through your documentation and can see that it is going to be an invaluable resource for others that would like to get involved.

I have been running Froyo, so this is quite the change of pace for me. Froyo is just so fast! I'm going to run this for a little while though, and I'll let you know if I run into anything out of the ordinary.
