First Time Android User, q on OS upgrade

I'm a long time blackberry user. I decided to switch it up a bit and have bought an Xperia X10 mini pro. I was wondering what the downside of getting the Android 1.6 OS?

Also how big a deal is it to upgrade the OS on a phone?
