Hi all, thanks for all the great info on here! I have had my evo for about 8 months and would like to root but im kinda old so most of this is way over my head.

Also, the kid working at the sprint store said there is "1 click" methods for rooting which sounds more my speed but you guys are the experts I certainly trust your collective knowledge over his.
My main reason for rooting is to get the preloaded crap off MY phone that i dont seem to be able to remove.
The other reason for rooting is to use my evo for a hotspot, will this be possible?
And finally, will i be able to get the paid apps in the market free of charge?
    Thanks in advance and cheers!

Read the Guide Rooting for dummies. Its pretty straight forward. You will find it very easy to follow along with and with the guide is probably the worlds greatest support system for it. You will find how easy it is to root.

I think with the older phones that was true however today it is not quiet so simple however its not as complicated as one would make it seem. I do believe there is a newer root method out but have little knowledge about it. I prefer the tried and trued way.

Honestly the best way to remove those things and to achieve most of what you want would be to flash over to mikg. While after root you certainly can remove the bloatware from the phone I believe the Mikg has a hacked hotspot.

Unfortunately you have to pay for paid apps. Apps are sync to your Google Account so when you purchase and app Google knows who to bill automatically, (based on previous bills for the account)

What is your current hboot version? If you are unsure how to find that, power off your phone then hold volume down+power til the white bootloader screen comes up. Top left has an hboot version. If your phone boots normally, you will need to go to settings and uncheck fast boot(which likely means you have 2.16 for an hboot version).

Thank you for the warm welcome, im going to try the root in a little bit (crosses fingers).. I unchecked the fast boot if that tells you what version i have.. Any other hits, tips or tricks? I am going to use the root for dummies and install the mikg rom so i can get the free hotspot feature, does this sound right? Thanks again

Sounds like a plan. You will need to follow the Rooting guide Gingerbread Edition to get rooted.

It's actually good that you turned off fast boot, but that's not exactly what he was saying. Power your phone down all the way, and let it turn off and sit there for a few seconds. Then hold volume-down and then press and hold the power button at the same time. There will be a white screen that appears that will list your hboot version towards the top. Like stated above, it will likely be v2.16 if you've made all the software upgrades over the last several months.

Once we determine your hboot version, then we can point you in the direction of the tool you need to root.

It's easier than you probably realize, just make sure you follow the instructions. You need the Revolutionary tool found at the Revolutionary.io site. You'll need to download the tool, the driver, and the superuser zip file listed on the site to obtain root access. You don't need the superuser zip file if you plan on flashing a custom rom right away.

While you're at it, check out the link for Amon RA in my signature. It's a superior recovery than what you will get by using the Revolutionary tool. You probably aren't familiar with what a "recovery" so I will explain it as easy as I can.

Recovery is what allows you to flash updates/mods to your phone. Right now, you have the HTC stock recovery, which is meant to do one thing and one thing only....install HTC over the air updates. Now that you're rooted, this is useless. Revolutionary will put the Clockwork recovery on your phone, which will allow you to make customized, non HTC updates to your phone. Clockwork is ok, but Amon RA is an alternate recovery and any Evo user will tell you it's better

Thanks mizzou! My main 2 reasons for rooting is to remove bloatware and for the hotspot but im sure ill find many benifits along the way as most of you have. Whatever you feel is the best recovery tool ect. is fine with me.

On a sidenote after visiting other forums for android and other interests this by far has the most selfless and cordial users. wading through the bickering and bull$#*% is just not worth the hassle on most forums so i sure do appreciate you guys/gals

if you just wait the file should automatically download for you. these download sites makes it difficult to find the actual file. so be careful. if you do not get the file to download then post back and i will put it in my dropbox for you.

Trying to install Revolutinary file and just says, "Waiting for device"....could this be because I still have EasyTether installed on the same computer?

Maybe. Make sure you're set to "charge only" and that you have USB debugging enabled

yeah i would uninstall easytether from both computer and phone. anything that can communicate with the phone could interrupt the process.
