A little background before my questions
I have a hero that I had a guy at work root and have felt helpless to solve some of the problems. I'm going to root it this time and set it up for what I want. The problem appears to be with my new SD card when I upgraded. I had Fresh 2.3 on the phone which I liked as it was very similar to the stock phone version.
I am leaning towards CM6, the stable version. My priorities for the phone are to reduce the lag and increase the performance while being able to surf the web. The phone is more of a toy for me but I want all of the performance I can get while I wait for something other than the EVO to hit the market. The only other important features to me are the wireless tether which worked great and decent battery life. I want the phone to be fairly stable and would like to OC/UC it.
Does CM6 appear to be the right rom for me or is there something else that is suggested.

Fresh is Sense UI, you could also try aosp's rom, very fast as well and similar to the CM6
