I want better battery life but I don't want the look or performance of my phone to change.

Is it possible to install a different kernel only? And is the kernel what can improve battery life?

My phone is rooted using the Unrevoked method if that matters.

Also, if someone could tell me the info they would need to know about my phone in order to suggest a good kernel for battery life, I'd appreciate if you could let me know what details you need and how to find them.

I sincerely appreciate any help anyone is willing to offer!

Being as you are rooted, you can flash a different kernel though in order to take advantage of it, you will need an app like SetCPU to control the kernel. Lets start with a little info. Are you running Android 2.2 or 2.3.3? It matters because there are different kernels based on your android version. You are on the stock rom so a sense kernel would be needed.

If you are on the stock 2.2 rom and already have Set CPU, then I would suggest checking out the Netarchy kernels. You can find them in the Rom/Kernel sticky here.
