So I have rooted, de-odexed, and installed roms and themes on my DX but of course never a kernel. So far on my Rezound I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted... What steps do I take now? I want to flash BAMFs Kernel and then play around with different ROMs.

Next step would be install a recovery. You have two choices currently:

    CWM
    Amon Ra

then follow the instruction in the thread where the BAMF kernel is being distributed.

which is simply flash the zip file in recovery and follow the scripted(automated) process. I recommend wiping your cache and davik cache before you install the kernel.

Newly rooted and just read the Team BAMF instructions on kernel install. A few questions.

So will all kernel zips put a boot img file onto the SD card automatically?

After flashing a rom or kernel in recovery, I assume the phone will not always reboot into hboot, so we should go to hboot and update boot img reqardless?
