Maybe he uses Google Voice? They offer free SMS to anyone, but no MMS support at all.

No, it's not automatically set up. But you can just use the Google Voice app and voila, free SMS. Don't have it forward it to your phone and no text charge

Somewhat related to this, does anyone know of a way to turn your regular text messaging off? I use Google Voice, but about twice a month I get spam texts, costing me $0.20 each, in spite of being on the "no-call" list. $0.40 per month is of course no big deal, but it bothers me that I have no control over it at all and it could become $200 a month.

Just call Verizon customer service and request that they turn off texting. You can't turn it off yourself. I had to do that for the sane reason.
